Empowering Sri Lankan Workers Abroad: Strengthening Remittance Channels In Romania

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bucharest continues to enhance financial cooperation between Sri Lanka and Romania by promoting secure and efficient remittance options for the growing Sri Lankan expatriate community in Romania.

In 2024, Ambassador Madurika Joseph Weninger hosted senior representatives from People’s Bank and Sampath Bank to encourage the use of formal banking systems for transferring funds to Sri Lanka. These efforts underscored the vital role of official remittance channels in supporting Sri Lanka’s economy and the livelihoods of families back home.

Building on this initiative, in April 2025, Ambassador Weninger facilitated high-level discussions between DFCC Bank and Smith & Smith SRL—a payment institution licensed by the National Bank of Romania. This strategic collaboration aims to provide Sri Lankan workers in Romania with fast, secure, and cost-effective financial solutions for sending money home.

“A key part of my mandate is to ensure that Sri Lankans working abroad have safe and trustworthy options for remitting their hard-earned income, which is a critical source of support for their families in Sri Lanka,” said Ambassador Weninger during the discussions.

Senior Vice President of DFCC Bank Anton Arumugam stated, “This partnership ensures that Sri Lankans in Romania can make instant transfers to any bank in Sri Lanka, with the added benefit of immediate cash pick-up at DFCC Bank branches.”

As part of efforts to promote formal remittance channels, DFCC Bank’s Remittance Services Department recently completed a successful promotional campaign. Highlighting this initiative, Chef Asanga Dayananda—recognized as the top remitter from Romania—was awarded a return air ticket during a special ceremony at Smith & Smith’s Head Office in Bucharest. Ambassador Weninger presented a certificate of appreciation in recognition of his contribution.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bucharest remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of Sri Lankan workers overseas, while continuing to strengthen economic and financial ties between Sri Lanka and Romania.
