Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai celebrates  75th Independence Day

  

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai celebrated the 75th National Independence Day of Sri Lanka on 04 February 2023 at the consulate premises. Officers from the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, several Sri Lankan nationals residing in Mumbai, and other prominent members of Mumbai’s business and tourism community participated in the ceremony.

The ceremony commenced with an almsgiving to Buddhist priests. This was followed by religious observances and blessings from the priests, lighting the oil lamp, hoisting the Sri Lankan national flag and singing the national anthem in Sinhala. Two minutes of silence in remembrance of those who have sacrificed their lives for the motherland was also observed. The independence day messages of the President, the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister were read in all three languages. The formal ceremony concluded with the singing of the national anthem in Tamil. The invitees were treated to traditional Kiribath and sweets.

As part of the commemmoration, the Consulate has planned a week-long Sri Lankan Food Festival and Cultural Programme in collaboration with the JW Marriott, Juhu, Mumbai starting on 24 February 2023. Trained dancers from the Sri Lankan student community, studying at Savitribai Phule Pune University will perform in the cultural programme.
