The 6th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) took place from 16th to 18th January 2014 in Berlin. At the sidelines of the Green Week, the most important consumer trade exhibition for food and agricultural products, the forum brought together policy makers from throughout the world to discuss the subject of “Empowering Agriculture: Fostering Resilience: Securing Food and Nutrition”. The GFFA is a unique political conference focusing on key issues regarding the future of the global agricultural and food situation. 72 Ministers from around the world and more than 1500 participants attended the Forum.

Minister Rishad Bathiudeen attends the 5th SAARC Business Conclave in New Delhi
Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen led Sri Lanka’s delegation to the 5th SAARC Business Leaders Conclave in New Delhi on 16 January 2014. The Conclave, held under the theme “The south Asian Century-Progressing Towards regional Integration”, was organized by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India, the SAARC Chamber of Commerce & industries and the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FICCI). Speaking at the inaugural panel discussion of the Business Conclave, Minister Bathiudeen highlighted the outstanding trade statistics that Sri Lanka has shown for the past few years as an example of sound economic policies that has brought successful investments to the country.

Secretary Weeratunga briefs Geneva diplomats on progress in national reconciliation
Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga who briefed Permanent Representatives to the United Nations in Geneva at the Palais des Nations on Tuesday (21st January 2014) on ‘Progress in the reconciliation process in Sri Lanka’, has said the Government of Sri Lanka has done all that was humanly possible to implement the recommendations of the National Plan of Action on the implementation of the LLRC, since its approval by the Cabinet of Ministers in July 2012.
First Bilateral Consultations between Sri Lanka and Oman
The first bilateral consultations between Sri Lanka and Oman took place on 15th January 2014 in Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman. The political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Oman and Sri Lanka was held at the Diplomatic Club in Muscat. Undersecretary for Diplomatic Affairs HE Ahmed bin Yousef al Harthy headed the Omani delegation while Hon Neomal Perera lead the Sri Lankan delegation at the bilateral consultations. The meeting focused on strengthening ties between the two sides in many multifaceted areas that includes Education, Oil and Gas, Culture and Maritime Security.
