Commencement of the First Working Day of the Year 2021

Commencement of the First Working Day of the Year 2021

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing commenced the first working day of the year by hoisting the national Flag, singing the national anthem and observing two minutes silence for the national heroes who sacrificed their lives for the motherland.

Following the lighting of traditional oil lamp, all staff members of the Embassy took the oath of public service lead by the Ambassador, Dr. Palitha T. B. Kohona, which was followed by inspiring remarks by him.

While wishing the staff a happy New Year, the Ambassador underlined the need for all staff members to perform their duties as a team to fulfill the aspirations of the country. Sri Lanka is currently facing many challenges. Tourist arrivals have fallen to nearly zero, incoming investments were reduced and external trade has diminished. Foreign exchange earnings have also fallen to a low level, with many Sri Lankans employed abroad having returned to the country. Therefore, it was the duty of the Mission to make a concerted effort to help the country to face these challenges and work together as a cohesive unit. We must work hard as a team to engage with the Chinese government, with investors and businessmen, and the public.

The Ambassador also highlighted the duty of all public servants to implement the policy of the government, reflected in the “saubagye dekma”, which is aimed at uplifting the lives of the public and the development of the country.
