Minister Peiris felicitates Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj

Your resounding electoral victory is yet another symbol of the trust and respect you have earned in your long illustrious career in the service of the people of India.  We are pleased that you have been entrusted with the important assignment of the Minister of External Affairs at this momentous juncture for both India and our region. We welcome the initiative to associate regional leaders at the inauguration of the new Government in India as an excellent manifestation of the leadership that India can provide for stability and economic progress of the region. Sri Lanka stands ready to walk together with India towards the objective of promotion of greater South Asian solidarity.

Sri Lanka strengthens Education and Connectivity Links with New Zealand

Professor G.L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, and Mr Gerry Brownlee, Minister of Transport of New Zealand, signing the Bilateral Air Services Agreement at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Auckland

External Affairs Minister Professor G.L. Peiris, on an official visit to New Zealand, had discussions at Massey University, one of New Zealand’s largest universities, on a range of issues connected with dairy development in Sri Lanka and the strengthening of collaboration with universities and institutes in Sri Lanka in the field of veterinary sciences.

In terms of a twining agreement with the University of Peradeniya, Massey University will provide the technical leadership, facilitation and project management skills to assist the University of Peradeniya with regard to the curriculum for veterinary teaching, and enhancing the capabilities of veterinary graduates in livestock industry.  Massey University’s Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences has experience in implementing complex capacity building projects in South Asia on behalf of the World Bank.

Dairy Development, Trade, Energy and Sports Co-Operation Dominate Sri Lanka – New Zealand Talks

The good offices of New Zealand, a major supporter of UN peacekeeping operations, to increase Sri Lanka’s contribution to these operations and greater engagement with New Zealand to expand the scope for Sri Lanka’s involvement in this area were discussed at the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the two countries in Auckland on Thursday, 8th May 2014. 

External Affairs Minister Professor G L Peiris held bilateral discussions with Mr Murray McCully, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Sports, at the Foreign Ministry in Auckland, during his official visit to New Zealand.

The Sri Lankan Minister expressed a wish to explore New Zealand’s excellent technology in the production of geothermal energy for power generation.  As Sri Lanka seeks to diversify its energy sources and become less dependent on fossil fuels, it was suggested that this could be one option that could lead to a productive partnership with New Zealand.
