Vesak Day Celebrations 2025 in Malaysia

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Kuala Lumpur celebrated Vesak Day 2025 with a series of vibrant, spiritually uplifting events across Malaysia, reflecting the deep-rooted Buddhist heritage shared between Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

To mark this sacred occasion, the High Commission premises in Kuala Lumpur were adorned with colourful Vesak lanterns, traditional Buddhist decorations, and lights, creating a serene and festive atmosphere welcoming all visitors and well-wishers.

The main Vesak celebration was held at the historic Brickfields Maha Vihara in Kuala Lumpur, one of Malaysia’s oldest and most respected Buddhist temples. Established over 130 years ago by British Ceylonese during British Malaya, the temple continues to serve as a centre for interfaith harmony and Buddhist practice in Malaysia.

The event began with the hoisting of the Buddhist flag by the Acting High Commissioner M.I. Mohamed Rizvi, in the presence of the Chief High Priest of Malaysia, Most Venerable Datuk Dr. K. Sri Dhammaratana Nayaka Maha Thero. The staff of the High Commission presented a performance of Vesak Bhakthi Gee (devotional songs) and offered a traditional Sago Dansala, distributing free refreshments to devotees and visitors. A highlight of the celebration was the Vesak Float Procession, graced by the Minister of Transport of Malaysia, Anthony Loke.

The High Commission also organized "Kadala Dansalas" (chickpea offerings) at key Buddhist temples including the Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple in Sentul, and at the Universal Spiritual Centre in Rawang, further promoting the spirit of generosity and compassion.

The Acting High Commissioner also had the honour of witnessing the commencement of the Vesak Float Procession in Malacca, organised by the Seck Kia Eenh (Malacca Buddhist Association) under the patronage of the Malacca State Government, marking another meaningful engagement in celebration of Vesak.

The Selangor State Government also hosted its official Vesak celebrations on 17th May 2025 at Maha Karuna Vihara in Shah Alam, with the participation of the High Commission of Sri Lanka alongside diplomatic missions from Nepal, India, and the Holy See.

The High Commission was honoured to join additional celebrations hosted by the Ti-Ratana Buddhist Society, including the Bathing the Buddha & Blessing Ceremony, and activities organized by the Tzu-Chi Foundation in Petaling Jaya, further strengthening interfaith and cultural ties in the region.
