The Embassy of Sri Lanka to the United Arab Emirates, in collaboration with the Sri Lankan community in Abu Dhabi, commemorated Vesak 2025 with a series of religious events held under the theme “Sadaham Varsha”, marking the Thrice-Blessed Day of the Birth, Enlightenment, and Passing Away of Gautama Buddha.
The observances commenced on 11 May 2025 at the Embassy premises with the participation of Ven. Delgoda Gnanasumana Thero, where approximately 200 devotees observed “Atasil”. During the “Atasil” program, a series of Buddhist religious observances including Dalada Thewawa, a Dhamma sermon, Dhamma discussions, and meditation sessions were conducted by the Venerable Thero, providing an opportunity for spiritual reflection and renewal.
The Embassy premises were beautifully adorned with colourful Vesak lanterns, handcrafted by the staff of the Embassy. These decorations served as a vibrant reflection of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage and enriched the spiritual ambiance of the celebrations.
The main Vesak Day event was held on the evening of 12 May 2025, with the participation of over 2,500 Sri Lankans residing in the United Arab Emirates. The event was honoured by the presence of members of the diplomatic community, including: the Ambassador of Thailand Sorayut Chasombat, Counsellor of the Thai Embassy Watana Chuttong, Deputy Chief of Mission Ranjita Dahal, Nepal Embassy and Officials of the Nepal Embassy in the UAE. The dignitaries joined in the Buddha Pooja, which was followed by the observance of traditional Vesak rituals.
In keeping with the spirit of Vesak, the Sri Lankan community organized several Vesak Dansal within the Embassy premises. These remained open into the night, offering complimentary dinner to all participants, reflecting the values of compassion and generosity intrinsic to Buddhist teachings.
On 13 May 2025, the staff of the Embassy organized an almsgiving for Ven. Thero, followed by a Dhamma sermon, concluding the Vesak 2025 celebrations with reverence and spiritual merit.
