The Consulate General of Sri Lanka organised the Vesak celebration on 05 May 2023 in co-operation with the “Maha Mahinda Buddha Vihar” in Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra.
The entire Mission staff and family members, headed by the Consul General, Dr Valsan Vethody, participated in the function. There was a congregation of approximately 200 devotees at the temple for whom an almsgiving/Dané was organised by the Mission.
During his address to the congregation, the Consul General spoke about the significance of Vesak as well as how auspiciously Vesak is celebrated in Sri Lanka. On the invitation of Consul General Dr Valsan, the Consul General of Thailand in Mumbai Donnawit Poolsawat also participated in the celebration and addressed the devotees.
The Consulate also printed 1,000 copies of “Buddha Vandana”, consisting of Buddha Gathas and Sutras, and distributed it among the devotees who expressed their gratitude . The rest of the books were handed over to the temple for distribution in Ulhasnagar.
The initiative received support and appreciation from the local community. The celebration was covered by Awaaz TV, a local news channel.
