The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Cairo hosted a Christmas celebration with the Sri Lankan community in Egypt on 25 December 2025 at the Embassy premises, reflecting the true spirit of Christmas.
The mass was officiated by Rev. Father Sajith Aruna, who travelled from Sri Lanka for the occasion, together with Rev. Father Sutharsan Yohapalan and Rev. Father Donald Christy Jagarasa. The service was attended by a multi-faith congregation, demonstrating unity and solidarity within the Sri Lankan community in Egypt. Special prayers were offered in memory of those who lost their lives due to the Ditwha Cyclone, while invoking blessings for the forthcoming New Year 2026.
The Christmas programme was enlivened by the singing of carols by children, parents, and members of the Sri Lankan community, while the presence of Santa Claus delighted the attendees and added joy and warmth to the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Sisira Senavirathne underscored the spirit of Christmas, which embodies compassion, love, unity, and solidarity. He emphasized its significance for the Sri Lankan community abroad, who are far from the motherland, in strengthening bonds and fostering togetherness. Reflecting the teachings of Jesus Christ on generosity, the Ambassador encouraged the community to extend support to Sri Lanka, which was devastated by Cyclone Ditwah, and to spread awareness among others to contribute towards rebuilding the country. He also expressed his appreciation to those who had already come forward to support the humanitarian efforts in response to the disaster.
The Christmas celebration underscored the strong spirit of unity within the community and was held at the Embassy premises after several years, in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Association in Egypt.
