The South Asian Athletic Federation (SAAF) Cross Country Championship 2025 was successfully concluded on 23 February 2025 at Fathima Jinna Park, Islamabad, drawing top-tier athletes from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Maldives. Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Islamabad, A. Christy Ruban, and Minister Counsellor (Defence) of the High Commission, Brigadier D. K. R. N. Silva, along with Ambassadors and High Commissioners of the participating countries attended the event as special guests.
The Championship competition was held under two categories: the junior category (8 km) and senior category (10 km), each evolving into a highly competitive and thrilling event, while showcasing the best of South Asian athletes under both junior and senior categories.
The Sri Lankan athletes who represented both events emerged as first runner-up in each category, winning silver medals. Additionally, competing as individual athletes, they secured several medals: gold medal in the senior category and silver medal in the junior category marking a highly successful campaign for the team.
The senior team comprised the athletes Abeyratna Banda, Damith Kumara, Vicknaraj Vakshan, while Sivagaran Thudiharshidan, Kavindu Madushan, Rajendran Vidushan represented the junior team. The management of the teams included President of the Sri Lankan Athletic Association, Major General Palitha Fernando (Rtd), Saman Kumara Gunawardane, Thilak Chandrlal and Gairana Gamage.
The support and encouragement extended by the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Islamabad highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration in the field of sports and also further motivated the athletes. Moreover, the championship not only celebrated the athletic achievements of the region but also strengthened the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the participating countries. The Sri Lankan contingent, along with athletes from other countries, expressed their heartfelt thanks for the warm hospitality extended by the Government of Pakistan and the event organizers. The success of this championship is expected to pave the way for more athletic exchanges and future collaborations in South Asia.
