The Sri Lanka High Commission in Pretoria marked the commencement of the New Year 2026 with a ceremony held in the spirit of shared vision and national unity.
The event commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag of Sri Lanka, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. A two-minute silence was observed in solemn remembrance of the members of the Tri-Forces and others who sacrificed their lives in service of the motherland.
Continuing a long-standing tradition, the High Commissioner and staff then lit the oil lamp, symbolizing prosperity, wisdom, and new beginnings. This was followed by the recitation of the Oath of Public Service, reaffirming the commitment of the officers and staff to serve the nation efficiently and productively, with honesty, firm determination, and utmost dedication.
Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner Air Chief Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa (Retd.) emphasized the Government’s vision of “A Thriving Nation and a Beautiful Life,” noting the importance of understanding the true meaning of this theme and being clear about individual and collective roles and responsibilities within the Mission. Further, he highlighted that the fundamental expectations of the Mission’s work should be community-centered and output-oriented. While highlighting the procedural improvements and community engagement during the past year, High Commissioner thanked the staff for their extra effort put in, especially in the aftermath of the Ditwah Cyclone disaster in Sri Lanka.
The High Commissioner concluded his remarks by expressing his sincere appreciation to all staff members for their unwavering commitment and positive attitude, without which the Mission would not have been able to achieve its targets or overcome the challenges faced during the past year.
The ceremony concluded with officers and staff coming together to enjoy traditional Sri Lankan food, fostering fellowship and unity at the start of the New Year.
