The Vesak Day Festival 2019 was held on 18 May 2019 at Aungzabutawya Dhammayeikthav Monastery in Yangon, Myanmar under the patronage of H.E. the Ambassador, Sri Lanka Embassy in Yangon in collaboration with the Board of Trustee of Dhammayeikthav Monastery to mark the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing Away (Maha Parinibbana) of Lord Buddha.
This religious event was attended by three Ambassadors in Yangon from the Embassies of Cambodia, Singapore and Nepal including members of the Sri Lankan community in Yangon and their family members and the Embassy staff.
It was the important occasion that was celebrated at this special day with the offering of alms for monks to mark the Birthday of the Chief Abbot of the Aungzabutawya Dhammayeikthav Monastery in Yangon, Most. Ven. Maha SaddammaJothikadhaja Bhaddants Pandavamsa (AungZabu Sayadaw).
The event was held following Dana, Seela Bhavana progrmmes. About 1,50,000 devotees including 26 Sri Lankan visiting monks attended this event. A Pirith Pandapa was decorated in Sri Lankan style and Pirith chanting was held by the visiting Sri Lankan Monks to invoke blessings.
The Ambassador, Mr. Ekanayake expressed that it was a great occasion for the first time that the Pirith chanting ceremony was held in Myanmar in Sri Lankan style.
In the evening programme, the Vesak lanterns prepared by this Mission were colourfully decorated at the ceremony.
