Sri Lanka Embassy in Jordan Commemorates 76th Independence Day of Sri Lanka

The 76th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka was officially celebrated on 04 February 2024 at the Embassy premises with the participation of Sri Lankan expatriates in Jordan.

The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Jordan J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. A two-minute silence was observed in remembrance and honour of all patriots who sacrificed their lives for the motherland.

The lighting of the traditional oil lamp took place with the participation of Ambassador Wijegunasekara and community representatives, which was followed by multi-faith religious observances invoking blessings on the country and all Sri Lankans. The Independence Day messages of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, and Foreign Minister M. U. M. Ali Sabry were read out at the event.

Speaking at the occasion, the Ambassador extended greetings to the Sri Lankan community in Jordan and highlighted the significance of the event. She urged the Sri Lankan community to participate in economic development-related activities in Sri Lanka in order to build a prosperous nation for future generation. She appreciated the strength and courage that Sri Lankans demonstrated during the challenging times of the post-independence era. Inviting all Sri Lankans to take every possible action for the safety, progress, and the prosperity of the motherland, the Ambassador stressed that our true independence will become meaningful only if we meaningfully participate in the economic advancement programmes in the country.

Following the cake-cutting ceremony, traditional Sri Lankan food was served at the conclusion of the event. Around 100 Sri Lankans were participated in the Independence Day ceremony.
