The Sri Lanka Embassy in Brussels celebrated Christmas on Saturday, 20th December 2014, with the participation of Sri Lankans living in Belgium and Luxembourg, in keeping with the tradition of celebrating all major religious festivals. The event was hosted at the American Women’s Club of Brussels and was attended by over 120 guests, including Christians as well as Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims.
Sri Lankan Ambassador to Belgium Luxemburg and the EU, E Rodney M Perera highlighted the significance of Christmas and addressed the gathering in Sinhala,Tamil and English. The main event of the programme which was conducted by the members of the Catholic community consisted of graceful dances and carols being sung in all three Sri Lankan languages as well as in French and Flemish. A nativity play was also performed by children which was thereafter followed by Rev. Father Roshan Fernando conducting a special blessing for Sri Lanka and all those who were present. To the delight of the children, Santa Claus made a surprise visit and handed out gifts, spreading the Christmas cheer. A reception was held at the end of the programme which was enjoyed by all those who attended.
