Sri Lanka Consulate in Innsbruck celebrates 75th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka

The Honorary Consulate of Sri Lanka in Innsbruck, Austria together with the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Austria organized an event to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka on 10 February 2023.

The event hosted by Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Innsbruck Dr. Christian Steppan was attended by Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka Majintha Jayesinghe, officers and honorary consuls based in Innsbruck.

The ceremony commenced with lighting the traditional oil lamp and singing the national anthems of Sri Lanka and Austria. The Sri Lankan national anthem was sung by two young children from Belarus who are students of the Museum of Sound and Hearing.

Addressing the gathering Ambassador Majintha Jayesinghe said that on the 04 February Sri Lanka celebrated the country’s achievement of independence, the joy and pride of which is evoked by this historic event seventy five years ago. It brings a sense of courage and confidence to the collective resolve to promote the country's image and interests. The Ambassador went on to express Sri Lanka's gratitude to the friendly people of Austria who stood by Sri Lanka and assisted the country in times of adversity.

Honorary Consul Dr. Steppan said Sri Lanka is one of the best tourist destinations in the world and urged everyone to experience first-hand the natural beauty and the hospitality Sri Lanka has to offer by visiting the country.

The event featured traditional Sri Lankan dances by the troupe of Channa – Upuli Performing Arts Foundation.
