Representative Office of Sri Lanka in Palestine celebrates the 76th Independence Day of Sri Lanka

The 76th Independence Day of Sri Lanka was celebrated by the Representative Office of Sri Lanka in Palestine on 4 February 2024 at Representative Office of Sri Lanka to the State of Palestine.

The celebration was arranged with limited guests due to the prevailing war situation in the region. The guests included Members of Palestine-Sri Lanka Friendship Association, Sri Lanka Nationals in Palestine and well wishers.

Representative Nawalage Bennet Cooray presided the function which commenced with hoisting the National Flag, lighting of traditional oil lamp and singing of the National Anthems of both countries. Religious observances were also conducted.

In his welcome address, Representative Cooray elaborated on the significance of Independence Day and spoke of the development activities and remarkable achievements gained in economic, social & cultural activities under the leadership of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Representative also highlighted the long-lasting solidarity and friendship that exist between Sri Lanka and Palestine. He also recalled the support of the Government and the people of Sri Lanka to Palestine cause and for two State solutions on the basis of relevant UN resolutions with East Jerusalem as Capital of Palestine. The stance has been openly expressed in numerous national and international for a including the United Nations General Assembly.

Independence Day messages of the President, Prime Minister Minster of Foreign Affairs were read to the gathering.

The festivities concluded with refreshments and sweetmeats served at the Mission.
