During the conversation, both sides noted the friendly nature of the relationship established between the countries, and the absence of major unsolved issues in them. Konstantin Kosachev highlighted significant commonality of approaches to major foreign policy matters, which is manifested in the course of discussions and subsequent voting in the UN and other important international organizations.
Lamawansa Meegahalande Durage drew attention to the significant prospects for trade and economic cooperation, primarily in the agricultural and industrial spheres, and also noted the high level of humanitarian cooperation. He expressed gratitude to the Russian side for the humanitarian aid timely provided to the Republic for the total of 24 million rubles in 2017 in connection with the destruction caused by floods and landslides.
Prospects for enhancing inter parliamentary cooperation were also discussed. Taking into account the results of parliamentary elections held in the Republic in August, Konstantin Kosachev expressed his readiness to resume dialogue through the specialized committees and friendship groups. He also proposed to discuss the possibility of closer interaction in multilateral parliamentary structures, primarily the Inter Parliamentary Union, in order to mutually support relevant proposals and initiatives related to the activities of these organizations.
