Official flag hoisting ceremony at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jordan on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day

The 77th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka was celebrated in Jordan at two separate events under the patronage of the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Jordan, J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara on 04 February 2025. The first event was held at the Embassy premises in the morning with the participation of Sri Lankans in Jordan, representing Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, and other communities.

The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the national flag by Ambassador Wijegunasekara, followed by the singing of the national anthem. A two-minute silence was observed in remembrance and honour of all patriots who sacrificed their lives for the motherland.

Multifaith religious observances representing Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity were conducted to invoke blessings upon the country and the people. Following the religious observances, the Independence Day messages of the President, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism of Sri Lanka were read out in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Wijegunasekara highlighted the importance of the momentous occasion of the 77th anniversary of Independence. The Ambassador appreciated the vital role played by the Sri Lankan migrant workers in the country’s socio-economic development. Furthermore, the Ambassador thanked the Sri Lankan community in Jordan, who supports their motherland, strengthening the country's economy through remittances.

Further, the Ambassador highlighted the main development goals of the Government of Sri Lanka including eradicating rural poverty, implementing the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, and building a digital economy, and requested the fullest cooperation of the Sri Lankan community living in Jordan to build a prosperous nation.

The event also featured a presentation on the "Clean Sri Lanka" initiative, presenting the audience an overview of the government’s vision for environmental restoration and social responsibility.

Additionally, a video containing important activities carried out by the Embassy in 2023 and 2024 was screened.

The event concluded with serving a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast.
