Ambassador Ameer Ajwad Presents Credentials to His Majesty the Sultan of Oman

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Sultanate of Oman Omar Lebbe Ameer Ajwad presented Letters of Credence to Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tarik on 11 March 2020 at a ceremonial event held at Al Alam Royal Palace in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

Ambassador Ameer Ajwad and his spouse Asmiya Ameer Ajwad were escorted by Royal Guard to Al Alam Palace, accompanied by Minister W.A.K.S. De Alwis and First Secretary Dilini Abeysekara of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Muscat.

The Credential ceremony included a Guard of Honour to Ambassador Ajwad by the Royal Guard of Oman and playing of national anthems of Sri Lanka and the Sultanate of Oman followed by the presentation of Letter of Credence to the Sultan of Oman. The Ceremony was attended by the Minister of Diwan of Royal Court, Minister of Responsible for Foreign Affairs, the Head of Royal Protocol, the Commander of the Royal Guard of Oman and the Military Aides to the Sultan.

During the audience with Sultan Hitham bin Tarik, Ambassador Ajwad conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa to Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. Ambassador recalled the longstanding friendly relations that happily exist between Sri Lanka and the Sultanate of Oman and highlighted potential areas that were identified for mutual cooperation during the bilateral political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries. Ambassador expressed his firm commitment to further enhance bilateral relations between the two countries during his tenure. Ambassador Ajwad also recalled a goodwill visit undertaken by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to Sri Lanka in 1997 as a member of High-level Delegation from the Sultanate of Oman.

His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik welcomed Ambassador Ajwad to the Sultanate of Oman and reciprocated his greetings to the President of Sri Lanka. Recalling the historic relations between Sri Lanka and the Sultanate of Oman, the Sultan valued Sri Lanka’s bonds of friendship and extended support for further consolidating the bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Ceremony concluded with Ambassador signing the Guest Book at the Al Alam Royal Palace.

Ambassador Ajwad, who is a career diplomat, joined the Sri Lanka Foreign Service in 1998 and served as the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka (Actg.) to Singapore and Brunei Darussalam prior to his appointment as the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Sultanate of Oman. He also served as the Director General for the East Asia and Pacific Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Relations of Sri Lanka from 2015 to 2017.

Ambassador Ajwad holds a Bachelor’s Degree (BA) in Arts from the University of Peradeniya, Bachelor’s Degree in Laws (LLB) and a Master’s Degree in Laws (LL.M) from the University of Colombo. He is also an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.
