Korean Media Institutions to promote Sri Lanka’s tourism destinations

The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Korea, Savitri Panabokke met with representatives of six Korean media institutions on 07 March 2023. The Ambassador and staff briefed the Korean media personnel, who are scheduled to undertake a familiarization visit (FAM tour) to Sri Lanka shortly, on the rich and diverse culture of Sri Lanka and the prominent tourist attractions in the country.  The media personnel were also hosted for a traditional Sri Lankan meal, as an introduction to the cuisine and culture of Sri Lanka.

The media FAM tour is organized by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Seoul with the objective of raising the awareness among Korean nationals regarding Sri Lanka as a highly desired touristic destination, especially for post covid travel. The media FAM tour will focus on promoting Sri Lankan tourist attractions, with a special emphasis on Buddhist sites, as there is an increasing interest from the Buddhist population in the RoK to explore Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has great potential to attract Korean pilgrims by creating awareness about Buddhist sites such as the ancient cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kandy and Dambulla, which are declared as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Sri Lanka is also home to two of the most visited Buddhist temples in the world, namely, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy and Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura.

During the media FAM tour, the Korean media will also get the opportunity to to understand Sri Lanka’s culture and scenic beauty. Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) and Sri Lankan Airlines are partnering with the Embassy in organizing the media FAM tour to Sri Lanka.
