The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jordan celebrated the 72nd Independence day of Sri Lanka at the premises of the Chancery on 04 February amidst a large gathering of Sri Lankans from the community and well wishers.
Subsequent to the hoisting of the National Flag and the observance of two minutes of Silence to remember and honour the fallen heroes, multi-faith religious observances by the religious dignitaries were conducted to invoke blessings on Sri Lanka and her Leaders. For the first time, the Embassy conducted the Buddhist religious observances through a pre –recorded visual with the assistance of Ven. Hureekaduwe Pannasekara Thero of Hureekaduwe Menikhinna, Kandy.
In keeping with the Green Concept of the President, Ambassador Shanika Dissanayake planted an Olive tree in the Chancery premises with the participation of religious dignitaries and members of the community representing the respective religions.
The Ambassador addressed the gathering emphasizing the vision of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to make Sri Lanka a prosperous and developed country. She called on the Sri Lankan community to join hands in this important endeavor which would make Sri Lanka’s development more people-centric.
The event concluded with a Sri Lankan lunch being served to all who attended.
On 09 February, as part of the 72nd Independence Day celebrations, the Ambassador and Staff of the Embassy commemorated the Independence Day at the Mabarrat Um Al Hussein, a home for Orphaned and underprivileged Jordanian children in the city of Marka. The Orphanage which was founded in 1958 by Her Late Majesty Queen Zain Al Sharaf is committed to uplifting the conditions of underprivileged children in Jordan.
Distributing gifts to the 60 Children at the Orphanage, an Olive Tree was also planted at the premises of the Mabarrat Um Al Hussein as a gesture of Friendship to mark the 72nd Independence day and to symbolize the close friendship between the two peoples.
Ambassador Dissanayake and the Staff of the Embassy toured the Orphanage with Mrs. Farah, daughter of Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint Talal who graced the event. Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint Talal, paternal aunt to His Majesty the King is the Patron of the Mabarrat Um Al Hussein Orphanage.
