High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to New Zealand, Prasanna Gamage called on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, Winston Peters on 13 March 2025 at the Parliament of New Zealand in Wellington.
Minister Peters congratulated the High Commissioner on his appointment as Sri Lanka's first resident envoy to New Zealand. Both Minister Peters and High Commissioner Gamage shared views on strengthening Sri Lanka–New Zealand bilateral relations by boosting trade, tourism and agricultural and economic exchange. The discussions also centered on the Sri Lankan community domiciled in New Zealand. Minister Peters acknowledged the improvements in Sri Lanka’s economy and its recovery from the economic crisis in 2022. High Commissioner Gamage briefed the Minister on the actions taken by the Government thus far to ensure fiscal stability and initiate a national reconciliation process.
Further, High Commissioner Gamage thanked Minister Peters and the Government of New Zealand for the warm reception extended to him and the staff of the High Commission of Sri Lanka on their visit, and expressed appreciation for the assistance offered during the establishment process of the Sri Lankan Mission in Wellington.
Senior Foreign Affairs Advisor, Michael Appleton, and Specialist Ministerial Advisor, Jon Johansson accompanied Minister Peters during the meeting. Minister of the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Wellington, Kithsiri Herath accompanied the High Commissioner Gamage, representing the Sri Lankan side.
