High Commission of Sri Lanka in Ottawa hosts Iftar Dinner

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Ottawa hosted an Iftar dinner on 05 April 2024 with the participation of the Sri Lankan Muslim community at the A.M.A. Center in Ottawa.

The event commenced with Kirath, a prayer by Mr. Hafeez Arshaad Mohamed Auff. Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Canada Harsha Kumara Navaratne thanked them for participating in the event. The High Commissioner further stated that this is the first time that the High Commission had organized an Iftar event with the participation of over hundred invitees.  He said that the doors of the High Commission are open to everyone and the staff of the Embassy is committed to serve Sri Lankans in Canada.  High Commissioner Navaratne further observed that Canada is home for the largest Sri Lankan community living outside its borders and that overseas Sri Lankans are an asset as they contribute to Sri Lanka's development in many ways.

While expressing their greetings, the community leaders requested the Muslim community to join hands with them in their various efforts to build a united Sri Lankan community in Canada.

On behalf of the Muslim community, Dr. Muzakir Majeed thanked the High Commissioner, Deputy High Commissioner and staff of the Embassy for their efforts in organizing the Iftar event. He stated that such events provide space for all communities to come together and it should continue as an annual event. He also spoke of the virtues and principles of fasting.

After prayers, all invitees broke fast together and shared a traditional Iftar dinner organized by the High Commission.
