The event commenced with the singing of the national anthem. Actg. High Commissioner P.M. Amza addressing the gathering stated that the country has been making a remarkable economic progress since the defeat of terrorism under the strong leadership of H.E. Mahinda Rajapaksa, the President, and the people are celebrating the New Year with a great sense of unity. He requested the staff members of the High Commission to serve the public with renewed dedication. He also called upon the Sri Lankan expatriates in the UK to make use of the Sinhala Tamil New Year festive season to rekindle and strengthen the bonds of amity and friendship which has always been a hallmark of Sri Lanka’s pluralistic society, and help the ongoing endeavours of reconciliation.
Those present were served with Sri Lankan traditional sweetmeat and milk rice.
