The Government of the Republic of Cyprus has extended humanitarian assistance amounting to Euro 100,000 (€100,000) to support the people of Sri Lanka affected by the severe flooding and devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
This assistance follows engagements between the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Cyprus and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, including an in-person briefing provided to the Director of the Department of Asia and Oceania of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus on the humanitarian emergency in Sri Lanka.
During these discussions, the Consul General of Sri Lanka in Cyprus outlined the scale of the disaster, the human and material losses, and the Government of Sri Lanka’s ongoing rescue, relief, and humanitarian response efforts.
The Director of the Department of Asia and Oceania of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus conveyed the condolences of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus to the victims and reaffirmed Cyprus’s solidarity with Sri Lanka, expressing readiness to support the country during this difficult period.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus has informed that the humanitarian contribution will be disbursed through UNICEF – South Asia Region (Humanitarian Call), with specific reference to Sri Lanka.
Given the long-standing and close relations between the two countries, including strong people-to-people ties with approximately 10,000 Sri Lankan migrant workers contributing to the Cypriot economy, this humanitarian contribution is of considerable significance.
The Government and the people of Sri Lanka extend sincere appreciation to the Government and the people of the Republic of Cyprus for this timely and meaningful gesture of solidarity. A formal Note of Thanks to the Government of the Republic of Cyprus will be conveyed through diplomatic channels.
