
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Philippines participated in the commemoration of the Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July 2025 organised by the South African Embassy in the Philippines.
This year’s Mandela Day celebration took place at Nayon ng Kabataan, a non-profit organisation committed to providing therapeutic and rehabilitative care for children in need of special protection. Operated under the auspices of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) of the Philippines, the facility functions as a temporary shelter for vulnerable children aged 7 to 17, including those who have been abused, abandoned, or affected by human trafficking. At present, the centre extends its support and services to over 150 children.
Ambassador Chanaka Talpahewa participated at the event and made a personal donation comprising of a quantity of rice and other items. The event was attended by the officials and staff of the DSWD, members of the Diplomatic and Consular Missions and International Organisations and private companies. The program featured a gift-giving ceremony to the beneficiary children, community outreach and a cultural/musical performance presented by the children.
