Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Netherlands hosts Iftar ceremony

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Netherlands hosted an Iftar ceremony at the Embassy premises on 22 March 2025, with the participation of a cross-section of the Sri Lankan community in the Netherlands.

The event commenced with prayers and a speech by Imam Dr. Muhammad Ashfaq on the principles and significance of Ramadan and the benefits of fasting during the holy month. The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Netherlands, Rekha Gunasekera welcomed the Sri Lankan community to the Embassy and highlighted that Ramadan signals a time of devotion, self-discipline and compassion for millions across the world, including Sri Lankan citizens of the Islamic faith. She stated that the values of Ramadan – empathy for the less fortunate, gratitude and community services are values that resonate with Sri Lankan society as a whole. Sri Lanka is home to a rich tapestry of cultures, traditions and beliefs that have co-existed harmoniously throughout the history and the country’s diversity is its greatest asset. A video depicting how Sri Lanka celebrates Ramadan was also aired at the event.

All arrangements were made to break fast with Sri Lankan kanji and short eats. A traditional Sri Lanka style Iftar dinner followed afterwards. The Iftar gathering provided an opportunity for members of the Sri Lankan community to come together with a sense of unity and togetherness, and the efforts of the Embassy in conducting Iftar celebrations at the Embassy were much appreciated.
