Embassy of Sri Lanka and National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) of Bahrain conduct a session on human rights and social development opportunities

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Manama together with the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) of Bahrain organized a session for the Sri Lankan community in Bahrain, highlighting vital human rights issues and social development opportunities. The event that took place on 14 November 2024, featured respected member of the Shura Council and Commissioner of the NIHR, Hala Ramzy Fayez as the keynote speaker.

During her presentation, Commissioner Fayez emphasized the importance of fostering a strong understanding of human rights within diverse communities. Addressing a gathering of professionals and various representatives from the Sri Lankan community, she discussed key topics such as the role of NIHR in relation to human rights in social integration and community empowerment, current initiatives by the NIHR to promote awareness of human rights issues. She also highlighted opportunities for collaboration between Bahrain and Sri Lanka in addressing common challenges.

During the Q & A session, representatives from the Sri Lankan community and NIHR engaged in a candid and constructive dialogue. They exchanged views on the current human rights situation and discussed national obligations under international human rights frameworks. The discussion highlighted the importance of continued efforts to safeguard rights, uphold dignity, and ensure justice for all individuals.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Bahrain, H.M.G.R.R.K. Wijeratne Mendis expressed her appreciation to Commissioner Fayez and NIHR for organizing the awareness session which fostered an interactive dialogue, allowing community members to voice their concerns and suggestions. The forum was moderated by Minister and Head of Chancery of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Manama, Madhuka Silva and attended by the heads of Sri Lankan community associations and the members of the staff of the Embassy.

The engagement underscored the mission of the NIHR to act as a bridge between citizens and governmental institutions, advocating for the rights and well-being of all residents in Bahrain. Discussions held at the event will pave way for further initiatives to empower the Sri Lankan expatriate community in Bahrain.
