Education Minister attends the World Copernican Congress in Torun, Poland

Minister of Education, Dr. Susil Premajayantha, attended the World Copernican Congress held in Torun, Poland from 19 – 21 February 2023, at the invitation of the Minister of Education and Science of Poland, Przemysław Czarnek.


Minister Premajayantha met the Minister of Education and Science of Poland, Przemysław Czarnek, during the event and discussed ways and means to advance bilateral cooperation in the education sector. 


The Minister also had the opportunity to meet with Ministers, scientists and scholars from around the world to discuss key developments in science education and best practices to promote freedom of scientific research for societal benefit and progress.

 

The participating Ministers adopted the Torun Declaration to ensure freedom to conduct scientific research as well as to promote freedom of scientific criticism and debate.

The World Copernican Congress is an international event to mark 550 years since the birth of the famous Renaissance astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. The Congress seeks “to present the state of research on the life and activities of the great scientist and astronomer, as well as his impact on the development of science, culture and the arts." Participation of foreign country delegates was funded by the organizers.

 

The Chairman of the Arthur C. Clarke Institution for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT) Prof. Chandana Jayaratne also participated in the Congress.
