The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Milan marked the 77th anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka with a ceremony under the theme “Towards a National Renaissance”. The event, held on 04 February 2025, brought together the Sri Lankan expatriate community in Northern Italy.
The official ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the national flag and the singing of the national anthem, followed by a two-minute silence in remembrance of all those who sacrificed their lives for the motherland. The traditional oil lamp was lit by the Consul General, officers representing the staff and children representing Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and Burgher ethnicities of the Sri Lankan expatriate community.
Multi-religious observances were conducted by religious leaders, invoking blessings on the country and its citizens. The Independence Day messages of the President, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism of Sri Lanka were read out by the officials of the Consulate General.
Addressing the gathering, Consul General of Sri Lanka in Milan, Dilani Weerakoon commended the constant support rendered by the community in Milan and Northern Italy for the endeavours undertaken by the Consulate General, and their contribution to the economy of the country through remittances. She emphasized the significance of national unity and renewal, stating that the future of Sri Lanka would be shaped by the collective efforts of its people in realizing government-led initiatives. An introduction to the "Clean Sri Lanka" initiative launched by the government was also presented to the participants raising awareness of the objectives of the initiative and inviting collaboration from the community.
Awards of appreciation were presented to those who made an outstanding contribution to various promotional programmes organized by the Consulate General and certificates were awarded to children who performed at different events/programmes.
Sri Lankan expatriate children from Sri Lankan International schools, dancing and music academies in Milan delivered captivating performances. The ceremony concluded with the singing of the national anthem in the Tamil language. At the end of the official ceremony, the attendees were treated to a traditional Sri Lankan buffet.
