Consulate General in Jeddah Celebrates the 72nd Independence Day of Sri Lanka

A flag hoisting ceremony was held at the Consulate General premises on 04 February 2020 to commemorate the 72nd Independence Day of Sri Lanka.

The ceremony commenced with the hosting of the National flag by Counsellor T.F.M.Aashiq followed by the singing of the National anthem and Jayamangala Gatha by the students of the Sri Lankan International School in Jeddah.

Two minutes of silence was observed remembering those who sacrificed their lives for the motherland. The traditional lightning of oil lamp took place with the participation of Sri Lankans representing all sectors followed by multi-faith religious observances invoking blessings on the country.

An extract from the manifesto of the President and the Independence Day messages of the Honourable Prime Minister and the Honourable Minister of Foreign Relations were read in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages respectively.

Addressing the gathering Counsellor, Mr. Aashiq outlined the importance of working hard to achieve the goals of the President as stated in his policy statement “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour” which includes achieving a productive citizenry, a happy family, a disciplined society and a prosperous nation. And he also stated that the 21st Century has been economically identified as  the ‘Century of Asia’ and that Sri Lanka will be a key player balancing international relations thus safeguarding our sovereignty and territorial integrity of our motherland while achieving the economic developments.

Ceremony also featured an artwork exhibition on ‘National heroes’ by the students of the Sri Lankan International School. Prizes and certificates were awarded to the students of the Sri Lankan International School who participated in the competitions held in view of the 72nd Independence Day Celebrations.

A large number of Sri Lankans and well-wishers attended the ceremony and the guests were hosted for breakfast with traditional Sri Lankan food items representing the diversity and culture.
