Celebration of International Women’s Day

Consul General of Sri Lanka Madurika Joseph Weninger was invited to join a panel discussion on International Women’s Day with inspiring women, career Consuls General and students as well as the Vice-President of the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.  Consuls General from countries such as Japan, Greece, USA and Mexico joined the panel discussion and spoke on women in leadership.

During the discussion Consul General along with her colleagues shared personal experiences, challenges, encouragement for young women and the leadership role of women Diplomats especially Heads of Mission.

Consul General also referred to Sri Lankan women being the first to be in many leadership roles such as having the world’s first woman Prime Minister who served three terms as well as her daughter who was elected as Sri Lanka's first female President serving two terms in office, the first female elected as Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council and also the recent appointment of the first female Deputy Inspector General of Police.

Consul General of Sri Lanka also spoke about gender equality being highly visible in Sri Lanka’s Diplomatic Service which comprises 56% of women.  She also touched on the Sri Lankan Government's commitment to creating a platform where Sri Lankan women can contribute to the betterment of our society as an equal player and ensuring economic empowerment, protection of women against violence and elimination of discriminatory laws, policies and practises.
