The flag hoisting ceremony to mark the 75th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence was held at the Sri Lanka Embassy in Doha with the participation of the Sri Lankan community in Qatar on 04 February 2023.
The national flag was hoisted by Ambassador Mafaz Mohideen followed by the singing of the national anthem by Sri Lankan students of the Stafford Sri Lankan School Doha (SSLSD). The traditional oil lamp was lit by the Ambassador along with four students of SSLSD representing the multiethnic character of Sri Lanka. Two minutes of silence was observed in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the motherland followed by multi-faith religious observances. Messages of the President, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs were also delivered.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Mohideen highlighted the vital role played by the Sri Lankan expatriate community at this crucial juncture for the country and reiterated the commitments of the Government of Sri Lanka and the Embassy to provide the best service for the community. The launch of the Queue Management System at Consular and Employment & Welfare Sections to facilitate Sri Lankans visiting the Embassy was announced. The event concluded with the signing of the national anthem in Tamil after which refreshments were served.
The Mission co-organized a Sri Lankan Festival under the theme 'Taste of Sri Lanka' in cooperation with LuLu Hypermarket Trading Co. on 04 February 2023 at their branch in Ain Khaled. This promotional event showcased a wide range of Sri Lankan food, agricultural and organic products. A Sri Lankan food promotion was held at Dusit Hotel in corporation with Sri Lankan Airlines on 02 February, attracting a large international crowd. A commemorative event was organized at the Marsa Malaz Kempinski hotel on 05 February which also promoted Sri Lankan cuisine. The Ambassador engaged with the large Sri Lankan workforce employed at these hotels and conveyed his appreciation for their contribution to Sri Lanka's economy and reiterated the Embassy’s commitment to their welfare.
