The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bucharest participated in Sri Lankan Voices in Translation, a literary and cultural event held on 12 December 2025 at the National Museum of Romanian Literature, marking the Romanian translation of The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, the Booker Prize–winning novel by Shehan Karunatilaka.
The programme, introduced by Andreea Lăcătuș of film co/lab, brought together literature, performance, and dialogue, offering Romanian audiences a vivid introduction to contemporary Sri Lankan writing.
Attending as Chief Guest, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Romania, Madurika Joseph Weninger highlighted the country’s rich literary heritage and the global reach of its writers, noting that although Sri Lanka is a small island nation, its stories continue to resonate far beyond its shores.
In the address, the Ambassador referred to distinguished Sri Lankan authors including Michael Ondaatje, Romesh Gunesekera, Ameena Hussein, Ashok Ferrey, and Anuk Arudpragasam, and reflected on Shehan Karunatilaka’s distinctive literary voice—shaped by bold imagination, dark humour, and a profound engagement with Sri Lanka’s history. The Romanian translation of The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida was welcomed as a meaningful step in broadening cultural exchange and introducing new readers to contemporary Sri Lankan literature.
The evening also featured a performative reading from the novel by Romanian actors, followed by an open discussion with members of the Sri Lankan community in Romania and representatives of the project team, creating space for reflection, dialogue, and shared perspectives.
Appreciation was extended to Ioan Cristescu, General Manager, Monica Morariu, the National Museum of Romanian Literature, and film co/lab for their vision and dedication in organising the event and for their continued commitment to fostering intercultural dialogue.
The evening highlighted the power of literature as a living bridge between societies and showcased the growing presence of Sri Lankan voices in Romania. Initiatives like Sri Lankan Voices in Translation spark new conversations, reach wider audiences, and strengthen enduring cultural connections between the two nations.
The Ambassador concluded by appealing to the Sri Lankan community and Romanian friends to support those affected by Cyclone Ditwah, emphasizing solidarity and hope. The appeal was followed by a moving video musical presentation, featuring “If Only I Could Weep for You (Sri Lanka)”—a powerful tribute to the courage, resilience, and enduring spirit of the nation.
