Belgium Supports “Gammaduwa” Tamil School in the Central Province in through fund raising initiative

The Sri Lankan Community in Belgium and the Sri Lanka Embassy in Brussels jointly organized a fundraising event on 26 April 2026, to support rebuilding ‘Gammaduwa’ Tamil School in the Central Province, which was badly damaged by landslides due to ‘Ditwa’ cyclone. A total of around Euro 17,600 (approximately SLRS 6,500,000.00) generated from the event is ready to be handed over to rebuild the school.

‘Istuti’ Charity Organization in Sulte in the Flanders region of Belgium joined in organizing this event.

The fundraising event was organized at the City Hall in Sulte, and over 370 people participated. Sri Lankan traditional cultural performances, music, authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, and the raffle draw attracted participants.

Ambassador Chandana Weerasena briefed attendees on the rebuilding process in the country after the cyclone and the Government’s role in supporting affected people, businesses and infrastructure development. He also thanked the organizing committee, all participants, sponsors, donors, the community, and all supporters who came forward to help in this noble task at this needy hour.

To support this initiative, the parish of the Dekenaat Horst of the Netherlands is also transferring another Euro 7,101.60 (approximately SLRS 2,600,000.00) directly to the ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund’ through the Sri Lanka Embassy in Brussels.

Both Belgian and Sri Lankan participants enjoyed the event while contributing to the fundraising effort in a number of ways.
