Sri Lankan Ambassador in Cairo holds discussions with the Governor of the Suez Governorate on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, and wider economic partnership

 

Ambassador Sisira Senavirathne met with the Governor of the Suez Governorate, Major General Hani Rashad, together with Deputy Governor Dr. Mohamed Allam and senior officials, on 19 April 2026 in Suez, and discussed avenues to strengthen cooperation and develop partnerships in trade, investment, and broader economic engagement under the auspices of the Suez Governorate.

Recalling the long-standing relations between Sri Lanka and Egypt across diverse sectors, including trade, business, and investment, the Ambassador briefed the Governor and the delegation on the wide range of trade and investment opportunities available in Sri Lanka. The Ambassador proposed closer collaboration to further enhance partnerships in trade, business, and investment for mutual benefit. Particular emphasis was placed on exploring cooperation in the maritime sector, especially through potential joint ventures in the manufacturing of boats, fishing vessels, and related industries.

Ambassador Senavirathne also apprised the Governor of Sri Lanka Expo 2026, a flagship trade and investment forum scheduled to be held in Colombo, and extended an invitation to an investor delegation from the Suez Governorate to participate in the event.

The Governor of the Suez Governorate extended a warm welcome to the Sri Lankan Ambassador and reiterated his strong support and commitment to enhancing existing relations while identifying new opportunities to promote cooperation in trade, investment, and business engagement between the two countries for mutual benefit. He expressed particular interest in partnering with Sri Lankan companies in the maritime sector, especially in boat building and related industries, in view of Suez’s strategic location along the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, complemented by its well-developed infrastructure.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Governor Dr. Mohamed Allam, Secretary General Ahmed Waziri, Assistant Secretary General Major General Aref El-Barkawi, and Director of the Investment Department Eng. Mona Saad. The Ambassador was accompanied by Second Secretary Darshika Dasanayake and Trade Assistant Omar Hamdy of the Mission.
