An event to commemorate the 15th year anniversary of the planting of a sapling of the sacred Sri Maha Bodi of Anuradhapura in the Philippines was held on 17 February 2024 at the Wisdom Park in New Manila, Quezon City.
The main event of the day was the exposition of Sacred Relics from Sri Lanka. This event also coincided with the Chinese Lunar New Year which fell on the same day. This is the second occasion in history that sacred relics have been brought from Sri Lanka to the Philippines. The first exposition was held in 2024.
The exposition commenced with the circumambulation and solemnising of the sacred relics by Ven. Polhengoda Indrapala Thero, The Head Priest of Shri Indraramaya Buddhist Temple in Sri Lanka, Ven. Ratthapalo Thero and Ven. Khenpo Rigzin Thero.
The event highlighted a Sacred Life Release, where a large number of captive doves were released, representing commitments to compassion and freedom for all sentient beings. This was followed by a Bodhi Tree Blessing where crystals and semi-precious stones were blessed by placing around the sacred bo-tree. Each attendee was asked to take home one stone each of their choice.
During the event, Ambassador of Sri Lanka in the Philippines, Dr. Chanaka Talpahewa presented to Founder of the Wisdom Park, Dr. Mariano Yupitun, a commemorative plaque with the resolution on the International Recognition of Vesak Day which was spearheaded by the former Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, Lakshman Kadirgamar and which was adopted at the United Nations General Assembly on 15 December 1999.
All those who were present were treated to a sumptuous vegetarian buffet lunch. Over 400 devotees and well wishes attended the event.
