
Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Sweden Kapila Fonseka successfully concluded an official visit to Malmö, the third-largest city in Sweden and the commercial center of the Southern Sweden region of Skåne—one of the country’s key industrial and innovation hubs.
The visit aimed to strengthen Sri Lanka’s engagement with government authorities, industry leaders, and investment stakeholders in Malmö and Skåne, with a focus on expanding trade, investment, and economic cooperation. Enhancing ties with the business community in Malmö is a strategic priority for fostering long-term and sustainable economic partnerships between Sri Lanka and Sweden.
During the visit, the Ambassador participated in a business roundtable organized by the Sri Lanka–Sweden Business Council. The roundtable was attended by Swedish travel industry representatives and entrepreneurs. Presentations were made by the Ambassador and the Business Council Secretary General Leif Ohlson highlighting Sri Lanka’s value as a premier tourism destination and Sri Lanka’s trade and investment prospects across key sectors such as ICT, manufacturing, technology, and the travel industry.
A meeting with the CEO of Invest in Skåne Micael Gyorel and Senior Investment Advisor Jeton Jasharaj provided an opportunity to discuss avenues of mutual interest in promoting trade and investment between Sri Lanka and the region. The Ambassador also visited the Medeon Science Park, where he met with its CEO Malin Bornschein and senior officials to explore potential collaborations in life sciences research and innovation. Medeon Science Park is recognized for connecting research institutions, entrepreneurs, and businesses, supporting both startups and established companies in bringing innovations to market.
Further engagements included a visit to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Southern Sweden for discussions with its Vice President Per Tryding on enhancing cooperation with Sri Lanka. The Ambassador was accompanied by Secretary General of the Sri Lanka–Sweden Business Council Leif Ohlson to these meetings.
The Ambassador also visited Dabico FMT and met with its CEO Prarthana Kaluarachchi. Dabico FMT, a leading Swedish manufacturer of passenger handling systems for airports and seaports, who expressed strong interest in expanding its business with Sri Lanka.
Throughout these meetings, the Ambassador emphasized Sri Lanka’s stable and peaceful political climate, robust and growing economy, skilled workforce, and the nation’s strong commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Sweden. Discussions centered on expanding investment opportunities, identifying new areas for economic collaboration, strengthening trade partnerships, exploring potential joint ventures, and improving market access for Sri Lankan businesses in Sweden.
The visit also coincided with the Ambassador’s participation in the Graduation Ceremony of the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö, where he met with the University’s President Prof. Maximo Q. Mejia Jr. Two Sri Lankan students were among this year’s graduates of this prestigious institution.
