As autumn unfolded in Bucharest, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Romania represented Sri Lanka at the renowned “Bread Fair” (Târgul Pâinii), held during the celebration of ‘Romanian Village Day’.
This international event brought together artisans, chefs, and cultural representatives from around the world — including Brazil, Mexico, Tunisia, Iran, Egypt, Algeria, and Sri Lanka — to celebrate the universal symbol of unity and tradition: bread.
The Sri Lanka booth stood out for its vibrant presentation of the island’s culinary and cultural heritage. Visitors were warmly welcomed with freshly prepared Pol Roti, three-layered vegetable sandwiches, Godamba Roti and Roast Paan (traditional Sri Lankan roasted bread). Guests also enjoyed authentic Kiribath (milk rice) served with Pol Sambol, Seeni Sambol and Hakuru (caramelized onion relish and jaggery), offering a delightful glimpse into Sri Lanka’s home-style flavors.
In addition to the culinary offerings, the Embassy introduced visitors to the island’s renowned Ceylon Tea, Ceylon Biscuits, Ceylon Coffee and Spices — including cinnamon, cardamom, tamarind, goraka, cumin, cloves, and pepper — which captivated the senses and sparked conversations about Sri Lanka’s enduring legacy as the “Spice Island.” The tea tastings and spice displays attracted enthusiastic crowds, with many visitors expressing admiration for Sri Lanka’s rich flavors, hospitality, and craftsmanship.
Throughout the event, the Embassy also promoted Sri Lanka’s tourism attractions, showcasing the country’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and unique experiences — from lush tea gardens and ancient temples to pristine beaches and diverse wildlife.
Sri Lanka’s participation at the Bread Fair marked a celebration of friendship and cultural exchange between Sri Lanka and Romania, strengthening people-to-people ties through the universal language of food.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Madurika Joseph Weninger, said, “It was a pleasure to share a taste of Sri Lanka with the Romanian people. The warmth and curiosity of the visitors truly reflected the spirit of friendship between our nations.”
Ambassador Weninger was supported by First Secretary Ms. Kaushalya Govinda, Attaché Mr. R. Ratheesparan, and the local Romanian staff of the Embassy, whose efforts contributed to the success of Sri Lanka’s participation in the event.
