The Consul General of Sri Lanka in Toronto Thushara Rodrigo, joined the Sri Lankan community in Toronto to celebrate "Hela Avurudu Ulela 2025" - Sinhala and Tamil New year with the participation of over seven hundred Sri Lankan Canadians. The Chief Incumbent of Toronto Maha Vihara the Most Venerable Ahangama Ratanasiri Nayake Thero addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance and historical evolution of this longstanding traditional celebration.
He also elaborated on the strengths of the indigenous value system embedded in Sri Lankan society.
The Consul General underlined the importance of the democratic values intertwined with rituals, folk games, folk songs, and customs followed during the New Year celebrations. He also emphasized the need of promote and preserve these unique traditions among the overseas Sri Lankan community to further enrich the values in society .
Veteran Sri Lankan legendary cricketer Arjuna Ranatunga also joined the celebrations.
