High Commissioner of Sri Lanka Air Chief Marshal (Retd) Sumangala Dias had a meeting with Deputy Vice Chancellor and Academic Staff of the University of Malaya on 16 June 2023. The discussion was focused on establishing greater ties between the University of Malaya and Sri Lanka Higher Education institutions. (University Grants Commission).
The University of Malaya has already signed MoUs with few Universities in Sri Lanka including with the University of Colombo. During the discussions, it was informed that it would be more advantages for both parties to initiate an MoU between the University of Malaya and UGC which is the APEX body that covers all universities in Sri Lanka. Such MoU will facilitate University of Malaya to engage with any university in Sri Lanka and students who desire to pursue their higher education in University of Malaya. It was also decided to arrange a zoom meeting with the authorities of University of Malaya and UGC in order to obtain their views in this regard and discuss areas such as dual PHD, research collaboration with international grants, academic Staff/student exchange concessions that can be considered when offering basic degrees.
Apart from the High Commissioner, Professor Dr Mohammad Ismath Ramzy, Chair, Education for Humanism and Social Advancement Research Centre (EHSAn), Prof. Dr. W.M. Tilakaratne, Prof. Dr. Yuonne Lim Al Lian, Associate Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement) and Prof. Dr. Yatimah Alia, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International) from the University Malaya were involved in the above discussion.
