At the invitation of the Governor of Gujarat Shri Acharya Devvrat, Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to India Milinda Moragoda visited the Gurukul Kurukshetra in Haryana on 02 April 2023.
The Gurukul Kurukshetra is a specialized school that instills the Indian Vedic value system in young people. When it comes to obtaining admission to the best universities and military academies in India, the School has an unblemished track record of academic excellence.
Gurukul Kurukshetra also owns a 180- acre farm that employes zero-budget natural farming method where wheat, paddy, sugarcane, potatoes, and other crops are grown for many years. The meals of the resident students of the Gurukul are prepared with the produce of this farm. The Gurukul has begun natural farming in 2014 and also teaches it.
High Commissioner Moragoda visited both the school and the farm during his visit to Kurukshetra. Kurukshetra is also known as the setting of great Indian epic Mahabharata and believed to be the place where the Kurukshetra War described in the poem had taken place.
The High Commissioner and his delegation met with the Director of Gurukul Kurukshetra Col. Arun Dutta, State Advisor of Natural Farming Dr. Hari Om, Administrator of Gurukul Kurukshetra Ram Niwas and other officials of the school. The ways and means to enhance cooperation between the Gurukul and Sri Lanka, particularly in sharing the know-how on natural farming were discussed. During the discussions, it was also revealed that paddy was the crop with the highest yield under natural farming.
The farm uses cow dung and urine as fertilizer. It was revealed that the microorganisms found in cow dung and urine improve soil fertility of the farmland and that one indigenous cow is sufficient to farm 30 acres of land. It is said that the zero-budget agriculture method employed by the Gurukul produces the same amount of yield of a conventional farm at a lowest possible cost.
