Seventy six Indian fishermen who were in Sri Lankan custody were released on the directions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

This is a batch of fishermen who were arrested when they violated the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) in early September.

President Rajapaksa has ordered the release of Indian fishermen on several previous occasions too as a goodwill measure towards India.

Indian fishermen who were in custody in Colombo were released on the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa as a goodwill gesture coinciding with Indian Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi's swearing in ceremony in May this year.
