Vesak Lantern Festival of Sri Lanka 2024 in Ethiopia

The Lantern Festival of Sri Lanka, organized by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Addis Ababa in collaboration with the Sri Lankan community in Ethiopia, was celebrated in Ethiopia on 23 June 2024, marking the International Day of Vesak 2024 with a magnificent showcase of Sri Lankan culture and Buddhist spirituality.

Esteemed guests, including government officials, ambassadors, representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations in Ethiopia, distinguished dignitaries, business executives, media personnel, and Sri Lankan nationals residing in Ethiopia, gathered at the “Sri Lanka House," to participate in this significant event.

The evening commenced with a warm welcome extended by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka K.K. Theshantha Kumarasiri. During the event, the Ambassador spoke about the significance of the Lantern Festival, highlighting the exquisite Vesak decorations that symbolize the profound truth of wisdom by dispelling the darkness of ignorance and delusion. He elaborated on the religious and cultural sentiments of the day.

The Ambassador noted the special importance of this year's celebration as it commemorated the 25th Anniversary of the United Nations' recognition of the Day of Vesak.

Rev. Bhikkhu Mahinda Thero, a Buddhist monk who transitioned from a successful career in finance and engineering to a life devoted to meditation and mindfulness, delivered the keynote speech on titled “The Power of Meditation.” The event focused on delving into the depths of the mind through meditation, advocating mindfulness and personal growth while executing loving-kindness towards all beings. All participants had the opportunity to engage in a unique guided meditation session and an insightful Q&A session with Rev. Bhikkhu Mahinda Thero, fostering a   profound exchange of ideas and experiences.

The atmosphere was illuminated by beautifully crafted Sri Lankan lanterns and exquisite Vesak decorations by the Sri Lankan community, adding to the charm of the occasion.

The culinary experience was equally delightful, with the participants savouring homemade Sri Lankan delicacies and indulging in the renowned Ceylon tea and traditional sweets, enhancing the cultural immersion.

The Lantern Festival symbolised a harmonious fusion of tradition, spirituality, and community, cultivating a sense of unity and enlightenment among all participants while embracing the universal spirit of Vesak for the peaceful coexistence of all communities irrespective of their religious faith or devotion.
