Vesak celebrations at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jordan

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Kingdom of Jordan in collaboration with the Sri Lankan community in Jordan, celebrated Vesak at the Chancery premises on 24 May 2024.

The main spiritual program began with the observances of the Atasil Program. A Dhamma Sermon was arranged virtually, highlighting the universal applicability of Buddha’s teachings based on the four noble truths and extending Vesak blessings to people of all religions worldwide. Devotees participated in Dhamma talks, chanting Pirith, meditation, and offerings to the Lord Buddha.

Ambassador J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara addressed the gathering, emphasizing the significance of Vesak for Buddhists across the globe. She highlighted how the teachings of the Lord Buddha can enrich the common ethos to address the multiple crises the world is currently facing. She further added that Buddha’s teachings remind us that true wisdom lies not just in empty rhetoric but in actions that promote harmony, peace, and tranquillity.

During the event, Vesak messages from the President, Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister were read by Ambassador J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara, Third Secretary (E & W), P.A Rupasinghe, and Second Secretary, Gajithra Navan respectively.

The Embassy was decorated with Buddhist flags and illuminated, creating a simple and colourful setting in line with Vesak traditions.

The participation of Sri Lankan children in Jordan in the singing of devotional songs added to the beauty of the event.

The celebrations concluded with a Dansala programme, organized by Trico International with the support of the Sri Lankan community in Jordan.

The event was attended by around 400 participants including some foreign nationals.
