The High Commission of Sri Lanka marked this year’s Vesak Day on Saturday, 21st of May, with the participation of the Sri Lankan community. In keeping with tradition, this year’s celebration too was predominantly religious in nature. The priests of the Johannesburg Meditation Centre were invited to lead the religious proceedings. The Chief Prelate delivered a sermon on the importance of Vesak Day followed by a meditation session. The Priests also invoked blessings on those that had been affected by the devastating floods in Sri Lanka and wished early recovery of all those affected.

The main religious ceremony was followed by the chanting of pirith and thereafter by the lighting of traditional Vesak lanterns that were prepared, with the participation of the Sri Lankan community. High Commissioner Sunil de Silva delivered the welcome address and informed those gathered about the importance of uniting as one community to help those in urgent need in Sri Lanka due to the devastating natural disaster that occurred this Vesak month.
