The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon, together with the Sri Lankan community in Myanmar organized “Flavors of Sri Lanka 2024”, an event promoting Sri Lankan cuisine and tourism. The fest was held at Pan Pacific Hotel in Yangon, on 09 November 2024.
The festival attracted around two hundred visitors. Among the guests and dignitaries were the Minister for Social Welfare of the Yangon Region Government, Htay Aung, and Mayor and Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC), U Bo Htay, Ambassadors, Heads of Mission, Chargé d' Affaires of diplomatic Missions and Representatives of the UN Organizations , Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, officials and representatives from other institutions and organizations in Yangon, including prominent Business personnel, travel and tour agents, media personnel and members of the Sri Lankan Community. The event was covered by The Global New Light, a daily newspaper in English, and the “MITV” channel, which featured the occasion in a news segment, showcasing its cultural appeal.
Guests were given the opportunity to experience the vibrant flavors of Sri Lanka at a venue adorned with traditional Sri Lankan artifacts and picturesque scenes which showcased Sri Lanka as a premier tourism destination while highlighting its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Continuous display of tourism promotional videos from the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, accompanied by documentary footage, along with Sri Lankan classical music playing in the background enhanced the vibrancy of the event.
During the event, an array of flavorsome aromatic authentic traditional Sri Lankan food representing the rich culinary heritage of the island was served to the guests in attendance.
The event is an initiative by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Myanmar towards enhancing and strengthening the relations between the tourism authorities and tour agents, in order to foster economic development efforts of Sri Lanka. While expressing her appreciations and gratitude to the invited guests for their presence, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Myanmar, Prabashini Ponnamperuma highlighted that the traditional Sri Lankan cuisine which offers an array of flavor combinations, is renowned for its medicinal value as well. Sri Lanka’s authentic gourmet traditions have evolved throughout centuries. In addition, being a hub in the historical “Silk Road”, close connections with other cultures, has created a delightful mix of diverse food. The Ambassador invited the attendees to visit Sri Lanka and enjoy its tourist attractions and the warm hospitality of its people.
The Ambassador also recalled that the year 2024 marks 75 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Myanmar, and that the sharing of traditional gastronomy is an ideal means to celebrate such significant milestones, as it furthers the awareness and understanding between people.
The Ambassador also appreciated and conveyed gratitude to those who sponsored, assisted, and supported the organization of the food fest, including Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Dilmah Tea Company in Myanmar, Sri Lanka Tea Board, Carlsberg Company, and Red Mountain Wine Company, Committee members of the event, including those who are from the Sri Lankan Association in Myanmar, in addition to the General Manager, and his staff of the Pan Pacific Hotel and the staff of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon.
