The Deputy High Commission of Sri Lanka in Chennai conducted ‘Diwali’ celebrations at the Post premises on 10 November 2023 with the participation of Sri Lankans living in Chennai and the Post staff and families.
Diwali (Deepavali), also known as ‘festival of lights’ is celebrated by Hindu, Jain and Sikh communities over the world and especially, Diwali is the most celebrated festival across India. During the festival, homes and other premises are decorated with Kolam designs and illuminated with lights, lanterns, oil lamps and fire crackers symbolizing the spiritual victory of light over darkness, which is the essence of Diwali festival. Sharing sweets with families and friends is an integral part of Diwali.
This year’s Diwali Cultural Evening at the Deputy High Commission consisted of performances by the children of resettled Sri Lankans living in rehabilitation camps in Tamil Nadu, staff of the Bank of Ceylon, Chennai, Post staff and their family members.
While addressing the event, Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka Dr, Venkateshwaran elaborated on the significance of celebrating festivals like Diwali to bring forth harmony to the multicultural societies.
The attendees of the event were served dinner with Sri Lankan and Indian cuisine.
