First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa stated that the women of Sri Lanka and China have worked together and co-operated on many endeavors in implementing initiatives taken for the advancement of women of the two countries. She made these observations at a bilateral meeting held with Madam Chen Zhili, Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and the President of the All-China Women’s Federation (ACWF). The meeting followed the International Women’s Day Celebration held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on 8th March 2011 to which the First Lady of Sri Lanka had been invited as a special guest by the ACWF.
Madam Chen accepted an invitation extended by the First Lady to lead a Chinese women’s delegation to Sri Lanka at a mutually convenient time. Senior officials of the ACWF, members of the First Lady’s delegation and Ambassador Karunatilaka Amunugama were also present at the occasion.
In year 2009, the ACWF donated material worth of over USD 70,000 for vocational training facilities for women in Sri Lanka. A delegation led by the Vice President of the Secretariat of the All China Women’s Federation Madam Hong Tianhui visited Sri Lanka in 2010 and observed some of the work done under the guidance of the First Lady in various parts of the country.
The All-China Women’s Federation founded in 1949 is the main women’s body of the Chinese Communist Party which unite Chinese women of all ethnic groups in all walks of life and which strive for their advancement. The organization comprise of group members at every divisional level of the Government.
