The current resident Sri Lanka High Commissioner in South Africa D. Wijesinghe, presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Armanado Emilio Guebuza on 23rd March 2011 in Maputo, as the newly accredited High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Mozambique.
During the visit to Maputo, the High Commissioner met a number of political leaders and government officials and discussed a wide range of issues on future strengthening of cooperation between Sri Lanka and Mozambique. The Government of Mozambique assured its continued support for Sri Lanka in its efforts to bring sustainable peace and economic prosperity for its people. During an interaction with the officials of the Mozambique Chamber of Commerce, both sides agreed to enhance trade ties between the emerging markets, especially in the fields of agriculture, hospitality and IT.
Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1975. In 1999, Sri Lanka established formal diplomatic relation with this Southern African nation, which is also identified as a country with enormous natural resources such as coal, gas, timber, Aluminium etc.
